  • Welcome!…

    to “A Step Inside”… our personal family blog, documenting the craziness of our every day life.. Sit back, enjoy, laugh, and share in the road we travel..

    I'm Bridget.. A SAHM (stay at home mom), mother of 3, and a follower of Christ. I'm also a photographer, and passionate about life.. I hope to share that w/ you too! Life isn't always perfect, but it's perfectly created in His plan. I'm beyond thankful for God's grace and His many blessings!

Organic Grocery Shopping…

I’m often asked how or where we shop for buying organic groceries.. I’m so happy to see that more & more items are being carried in our local stores.  Both Meijer & Schnucks are the two places we primarily pick up our food items.

We try 100% of the time to buy organic produce.  There are lists like this one that show what are a must buy organic, and which ones aren’t as risky.

Milk & eggs are another 100% must for buying in organic.  If it’s not organic milk is not available, Prairie Farms milk (and dairy products) contain no hormones so we will go w/ that brand.

Unfortunately a lot of food manufactures can get away w/ advertising gimmicks like “all natural”, “not processed” etc.  However, their ingredients will speak volumes.  Often times they are filled w/ horrible chemicals even w/ the gimmicks on the packaging.  Some ingredients that we avoid (like the plague!) are;

high fructose corn syrup
brown rice syrup
aspartame
splenda
sucrose
enriched wheat flour or bleached flour,  instead look for whole  grain wheat flour (This is even when the bread and/or pasta package says 100% whole wheat.  Enriched wheat flour is not true whole wheat)
MSG
any artificial sweeteners

Another tip… The top 3 listed ingredients are what you are primarily consuming in the food item.

This is what the packaging for the Meijer organic line looks;
Meijer Organics Whole Wheat Rotini - 1 Box (12 oz)Meijer Organics Strawberry Preserves - 1 Jar (11 oz)
Meijer Organics Original Instant Oatmeal - 1 Box (11.29 oz)

Hope that gives a little more insight when you’re grocery shopping the healthy route for your family 🙂
