Winter/Spring Mantel…

I love looking at how homes have their mantels decorated.  I’m always inspired to have it coordinate w/ the seasons.  My inspiration is at the bottom of the post..   My dear friend Kim, is great at updating her mantel, and I love her creative ideas.  Up until recently I hadn’t found a combination that I really liked, until my latest one.  I love the crisp of white, paired w/ the little touches.

The white mirror was purchased at Hobby Lobby during a week when their mirrors were 50% off.. Score!  I want to say it was around $22.95..

The white pitcher & greenery was purchased at HomeGoods.  I added the twine from some that I had in my “craft stash”…   The letter “B” was from Hobby Lobby, painted it white, sanded a little for a slight distressed touch, and then wrapped a combination of raffia & twine.

This plate was also from Hobby Lobby (around $2), and is a lightweight material, originally gold, but spray painted white.  I drew out a 5 (for our family of 5) w/ pencil, then painted w/ black craft paint.  The little easel was also gold, and painted white w/ spray paint.  Picture frame also from HomeGoods, w/ a picture of my three, sweet monkeys..

Finally put to use three of the baby food jars I’d had saved… A quick coat of white spray paint, and then roughed up a little w/ sand paper.. More twine wrapped around to keep them together.  The cream flowers & greenery were clipped from a stemmed bunch also in my craft supplies..
The adorable lantern, and whimsical vase were also from HomeGoods..  This just may be the start to a new addiction.  I’ve only been to the store once (about an hour & a 1/2 away), but I loved it!

This is what started the goal for white accessories;

Thanks for checking out my latest mantel decor!  :)

Fireplace Mantel Before & After

I’ve been wanting to re-do our fireplace for years.. I think it took seeing some before & after examples online before I had the courage to attempt it.  The process was super simple, and I can’t wait to tackle the next paint project.  To avoid sanding, since the oak wood had a glossy finish to it, I applied a coat of primer, then painted.  I love how it turned out!

Brushes: had already
Painter’s tape: had already
Primer: $17.98
Paint (Dutch Boy, Tiramisu DW27): $25.98
Paint Scent: $4.99
Grand Total: $48.95

Ten on Tuesday 4/12…

1.  I love using Flickr for inspiration.. I’ve been looking at homemade mobiles for Rowen’s room, and it’s so easy to find ideas by using the search on there.

2.  Love these fun ideas for decorating & decor around the home.

3.  I also love these spaces.  In our new home we are looking to have a room/area that is solely dedicated to my office and a playroom.  I’m book marking so many neat ideas!

4.  This is a really neat calculator.. If you’re like me, I typically have no idea what the going rate is for sitters..

5.  House update… Since listing on 4/1, we’ve already had 7 walk throughs now.. Great traffic, and getting lots of positive feedback.  Just waiting to see what God’s plan is, and finding the right family:)

6.  Such a silly girl… Picked this from the neighbor’s house.. Whoops!

7.  Kaylor is definitely loving this warmer weather.. Can’t keep the girl inside!  I love that she’s such an active kiddo.. Reminds me of my childhood days.

8.  Rowen is growing like a weed!  He’s into 3-6 month clothing now, and has the cutest rolls in his thighs.  Lots of smiles and babbles.. We love it!

9.  Today is the very first day for converting Ashlyn’s crib into a toddler bed… She has never tried to climb out, so we didn’t rush converting it..  Nap time was a success!  She didn’t get out one single time… Yay!  Hopefully bedtime tonight will go just as smooth.

10.  This Friday is my husband’s birthday.. If you’re friends w/ him on Facebook, give him a shout:)

Slime!

A couple of days ago, I thought it’d be fun to let the girls make & play w/ homemade slime.. The recipe was simple enough, and I have a box of Borox that had barely been used.  Our first couple of tries didn’t quite produce the right solid consistency, but I found the Martha Stewart one to work really well.  (I switched to glass bowls from plastic.. Not sure if that made a difference! lol)  The girls loved it!

DIY Gear Bag…

For the longest time I’ve eyed the Shootsac camera lens/gear bag, but at $179 for an accessory type bag, I never bit the bullet to buy one.. Don’t get me wrong, I think investing in good, quality camera bags for a heft price is a must, however, this one wasn’t the most complicated bag, so I held off..

Here are some of my other favorite bags that I use constantly though.. They all are great, but w/ different purposes and scenarios;  Yeah, I like bags:)
Epiphanie- she’s a beauty.. Camera bag/purse… LOVE!  ~Belle~
Canon backpack:  great for ALL my gear when doing weddings
Crumpler 7 mil home
Tamrac Velocity 6x

Back to the purpose of the post.. I have a bag that I carry on me when shooting weddings, but I found it wasn’t holding the lenses like I had hoped, and because a ball of bulk.. I love the sleekness of the Shootsac, and the ability to quickly swap out lenses.. So I searched for some DIY ones, and found a couple of links (like here).  They were helpful in getting me started, but some of the process was a “learn as you go”.. I’m a visual person, so I need good instruction pics:)

Here are the supplies:
two 13.3 laptop sleeves (made of neoprene) from Target: $10.00 ($5/e)
sew on velcro: $3.49
heavy duty thread: $2.40
Fabric for cover 1 yd (could have used 1/2 though): $2.79
Strap adjusters: $1.49
1in nylon strapping: $3.39
white fabric pencil (optional): $1.69
heavy duty needles: $2.19
TOTAL: $27.44 …. not bad!

Here are the steps I used;

I marked lines using the white fabric pencil for the “dividers” onto both laptop sleeves.  Two rows for one, creating 3 pockets, and one row on the other, creating 2 pockets.. Sew these lines on each sleeve individually.  I purposedly did not go all the way to the top, that I could slide my lenses out easily.

Then it’s time to sew both sleeves together.. Line them up, and stitch together right below the zipper line.  I did this so that I could still zip both sides.  (some people sew together and cover w/ bias tape, but then you cannot zip either sleeve) Then about an 1/8th of an inch small stitch on the side, and bottom corners to keep the bag from separating while worn.

After that, I sewed the D-rings on by creating a loop w/ about an inch & 1/2 of the nylon strap (cut to size).  I sewed one on each end, and in between the two sleeves, just above my stitching where they were sewn together.
Next just finish up the attaching the straps, and strap adjuster.

Last step was to make a cover, which is completely optional.. I sewed a line of velcro on the outter sleeve, and on the inside of the cover flap I made.  I layed my material over the bags to use as a guide, then cut to size.  Sewed it inside out, then flipped right side out and did a decorative stitch along the edging.  Attached by velcro, and viola!  This size is just perfect, and fits my 70-200L lens perfectly in the center..

I was really pleased w/ how it turned out.. My sewing machine was giving me some grief, but once I borrowed my mama’s, it was smooth sailing… Not bad for an ameature seamstress! lol

And a view while on my hip..
