A Step Inside bio picture
  • Welcome!…

    to “A Step Inside”… our personal family blog, documenting the craziness of our every day life.. Sit back, enjoy, laugh, and share in the road we travel..

    I'm Bridget.. A SAHM (stay at home mommy), wife, mommy of 3, and a follower of Christ. I'm passionate about life.. I hope to share that w/ you too!

Bridgetism… again…

Do you ever have moments in your life that just make you laugh? If you don’t you should!;) And if you’re not sure what a “Bridgetism” is… click here

Yesterday, after handing over packages to the postal carrier, I had this feeling that I had put the wrong label on one. I ran back inside, and sure enough, I had. I tried to catch him, but he was already down the street (thank goodness it was during the daytime, in which I believe most of my neighbors were at work).. I turned to go back inside, and had locked myself out of the house.. doh! Had to use the keypad and go through the garage. Thankfully, the mail truck is lacking an exhaust of some sort, because it is loud. Very loud. I was able to somewhat follow its location through the subdivision, and conveniently catch it on the way back through. Yes, the mailman did give me an incredibly strange look when I requested the original large package back so that I could change the labels.. Ah well.. lol

It’s very humbling to know that a Bridgetism is only a postage label away from happening =)

Ten on Tuesday 1/24…

1.  This is a website you can subscribe to, and receive notifications of books for Kindle & Nook that are either $0 or very low (like 99 cents)…

2.  Saw this in an email… Apparently the inventor has seen what my right hand nails look like when I’ve painted them w/ my non-dominant left hand:P Or maybe I can just have Ashlyn do them for me… <see here>

3.  I feel beyond blessed.  Every.  Single.  Day.

4.  Okay, so seriously, how did I not know that velvet coordinating hoodie & pants were THE most comfortable things in the world?!?  I should have known this years ago! lol… Thank you to my friend Stacey for the urge to try em’ out.. (I’m sure, unbeknownst to you! hehe)

5.  I’m certain you shouldn’t download this app…  Well, that is, unless you need to burn some brain cells on an addicting iPhone/iPad game.. (the kids love it too!)    “Where’s My Water?”

6.  I am now on week four of being back at a gym..  It couldn’t feel better, and I’m loving morning workouts that leave me pumped for the remainder of the day.  This is the first time I’ve ever done Zumba as well as  another dance related cardio class, and I’m in love!  Yes, I may look like I a toddler learning to control & coordinate his/her limbs, but I’m having fun none the less!  :)

 7.  Love sweet moments between my girls;

8.  And w/ their baby brother too; 9.  Key Ring is an awesome app, and I’m not sure why I hadn’t already known about it… You know the little plastic membership cards places give you so you can check in, accumulate points, save, etc.?  Unless you like having 20 extra things hanging to your key ring, this app is for you.  Download the free app, and scan each of the bar codes, and it will store & save your membership info.  Ahh…. minimization at it’s finest!

10.  It’s amazing how a fresh cut & highlights can make you feel… So thankful my bff has mad hair skills… She’s the bomb-diggity… Especially because I know she reads my blog:P

Nail Polish Uh oh….

Our sweet, little princess, Ashlyn decided that she would make an attempt to paint her nails last week.  By herself.  I called her for lunch (she was watching Dora) and she proudly came to show me.  ”Look mom!  I did it!  I painted my nails!”..   Aside from initially disciplining her about it, I was impressed w/ the paint job she did!  Somehow she managed to do them just as well as I do when using my non-dominant hand… lol

Ohhhhh, Ashlyn… Never a dull moment w/ you, child!

Pesto Cavatappi

We don’t often go to Noodles & Co. but when I have, I absolutely love their pesto cavatappi.  I’ve made homemade pesto at home and it’s fairly simple to make, so I thought we would have a homemade version of this yummy dish.  Here is the recipe I based mine off of, and I tweaked mine a bit to use what I had on hand.

Pesto Cavatappi
Ingredients:
Cavatappi Pasta- 1-2 cups uncooked (I use organic whole wheat pasta)
Heavy whipping Cream – 1 1/2 tbsp
Olive Oil – 1 tbsp
Parmesan Cheese – 1-2 tbsp Shredded
Pesto (used premade packet, just added water & oil)
Garlic – 2-3 cloves, minced
Sliced mushrooms
white wine (I only had Sherry cooking wine, and that worked too)

Cook pasta, while that’s going make pesto sauce.  Saute mushrooms in wine in a small skillet.  Once all three are separately done, mix all together w/ the pasta.  Add the whipping cream, and reduce heat to low for 1-2 minutes.  Top w/ grated parmesan cheese.  Enjoy!

God’s Will…

I kept looking for a bottle of something in our bathroom vanity this morning, and couldn’t find it anywhere.  I kept questioning myself as to if I had thrown it away or not.  ”Surely I hadn’t”, is what my mind kept repeating.  I looked and double checked, even checked a third time, w/ no luck.  I finally went back in a bit later to look a fourth time, and there it was.  Right in the very front of the shelf, couldn’t miss it.

My conclusion?  I was looking for a white bottle (as it had been in the past), but it was actually an orange bottle.  What I was looking for really was right in front of me, however, because I was searching specifically something else, I kept overseeing it.  Is this how we are sometimes w/ God’s plan?  When we are searching for something, an answer, a why, a reason, a sign, are we overlooking what is right in front of us?  Do we focus so much on the specifics that we miss what God is clearly telling us in plain sight?

From my study notes in the “Life Application Study Bible“:  The desire for spectacular signs may cause us to ignore the more subtle miracles God is working every day.

My learned lesson of the day… Be open to God’s will.  His answers, His whys, His reasons, His signs.  It might not be what I had expected to be, but it’s there:)

Rowen’s 1st Birthday | Party Time

And that’s a wrap!

After Rowen’s first birthday party, I was uploading pictures from my camera onto the computer, and started looking through images & videos from when he was born.  Tears filled my eyes, as I praised God for blessing me more than I could ever deserve w/ this perfect, little boy.

I loved seeing all of our family & dear friends all around us to help celebrate Rowen’s first birthday.  Our children are SO loved, by so many great people.  Thank you all again for being a part of the special day!

Dear Rowen,
As we celebrate your 1st birthday, we cannot help but feel so thankful to have you in our lives.  You are becoming such a big boy…  Cruising around furniture, even taking a couple of steps, and babbling away.  Your big smiles are constantly filling us w/ joy!  You sure know how to make your mommy’s heart melt.  I love you so much, Rowen Zane!
Love,
Mommy

I loved using Pinterest for party ideas…

Ten on Tuesday 1/3…

1. Fact… When Erik & I start watching any of the competition shows on the food network channel, they definitely hook you into watching until the end. Ya gotta see who wins!

2. Alright, who started watching the new episode of The Bachelor last night?… Or should I rephrase that.. Who will admit to watching last night?:PWe did! Lots of emotional girls this season, that’s for sure!

3. We had a wonderful Christmas w/ all of our family… Hope you did as well!

4.   5. Erik went back to work today after being home since December 23rd.. We loved having him here!

6. I’ve been busy planning my baby boy’s 1st birthday party that will be this weekend… Also trying to get the mommy tears out of the way.

7.  Random quote (courtesy of my husband) “We really need to start keeping fresh jalapenos on hand”… hehe… Um, okay!  I’m game!

8.  Our little buddy is now not only quickly cruising around furniture, but getting very brave and lunging between the 90 degree angle in our sectional.. Sometimes taking a step in between.  This mama is not ready for him to be walking!

9.  Looks like tomorrow I have my first appointment w/ a trainer at a gym.. Lord help me.. (and yes, that is a true prayer! lol)

10.  Wow, these three sure have changed!  I have lots of files of pictures that haven’t been edited, so I thought I’d start going through them… Image taken 3/24/11:

Homemade Gingerbread Play Dough…

We made this on Christmas Eve, and Ashlyn couldn’t have been more excited.. As if playing w/ play dough wasn’t enough fun in itself, the smell was scrumptious!

Here is the recipe that we used;

Gingerbread Play Dough
1 c flour
1/2 c salt
2 tsp cream of tartar
about 1/2 c of spices (we used pumpkin spice, cinnamon, & nutmeg)
1 c water
1 tsp oil

In a sauce pan, mix all of the dry ingredients, then add water & oil.  Cook on low to medium for several minutes, stirring constantly.  It will start to thicken, and darken in color.  It is done once it starts to take on a dough like consistency, and pull from the sides of the pan.

Ashlyn & my mom had a blast…

1.  Ah… the close of another Christmas season..  Hope yours was full of joy & laughter!

2.  I’m on the hunt for a new Christmas tree.. Erik thinks I’m nuts.  lol  We’ve only had our current one for two or three years, but some of the pre-lit lights keep going out, and I actually have my heart set on a different style.  Now, the only problem is finding the new one!  This is the style of branches/tree I’m looking for;

Main Product Image
3.  I love walking down our hallway and seeing this;

4.  One of my gifts that I loved was a jewelry organizer that hangs, from my mil.  I’m always giddy over anything that organizes!

5.  I’ve got some holiday moo-lah to spend.. Thinking I will get a new crockpot.  Mine only has high, low, and warm settings, so I’d love one that is programmable, and w/ a locking lid.  Guess I’m a grown-up now, since I’m spending my “fun money” on kitchen appliances:P

6.  Do you do after Christmas shopping?  I stocked up on wrapping paper, some treat containers, two tree skirts, and some other decor.

7.  I posted last year about finding some great prices on gifts.

8.  I can’t help but think that we’re almost through December and haven’t really had any now… Just a couple of brief dustings that quickly melted away.

9.  New Year’s is right around the corner… Any resolutions?

10.  This was a mini-session I did w/ Rowen for the picture for his first birthday invite.. More of these to come soon;

Black Friday & Christmas Decorating…

One of my favorite days of the year!  WhooooHoooo!  The game plan for this year originally started w/ meeting around 3am as usual for our annual shopping on Black Friday.  Two of my girlfriends, (ah hem) however, decided to switch it up a bit.. I got a text to meet them out, when I had just sat down at 9pm Thanksgiving evening to look at the ads.  I thought I’d meet them for an hour or so, head home for a few hours of sleep, then meet back up early in the morning hours.  Um, wrong.  Who woulda thought this girl could make it shopping ALL.  night.  long.  Yowza.. We did it though, and had a blast as usual!  Maybe not as many steals & deals this year as the previous, but laughter & girl time is always a win.

As tradition, we take down all of the fall decor and get out the Christmas decorations.  The kids look forward to this just as much as I do.. We play holiday music, and enjoy each others’ company.  I step back and let the girls decorate the tree by themselves… Even my ocd brain let’s it slide when Ashlyn puts three (or more) ornaments on the same branch..

Baby brother had fun “helping” the girls too… I think his favorite ornament was the jingle bells;
I love seeing how much the kids have grown since the last Christmas tree decorating..
